Our Mission

Our Mission

Our mission at Tree Cycle is the vision that gave the company its name: to utilize all wood from our local trees and collaboratively create unique pieces that stay in the community.
Based in the beautiful mountain town of Salida, Colorado, which is known for its thriving and compassionate community, we are wanting to contribute to its healthy growth and be part of an ongoing conversation about reducing waste and working together.
Our mission is to connect local arborists, woodworkers and homeowners.
While the process of pellet-making is our future goal, all wood generated from local tree work can already be utilized in manifold ways:
We mill our large diameter logs into lumber and collaborate with different woodworkers who turn unique pieces into elegant furniture and cutting boards.
All other pieces that cannot be used in this fashion are processed into natural poles, kindling bundles and firewood.
We love when clients receive something back from the trees they have loved and cared for. So many people in town are skilled in different ways, so let's enjoy the connection we have with each other, the passion for craftsmanship and the trees that look over us every day.

Removals

Shawn has 10 years of professional experience felling trees. He started sawyer trainings and receiving certifications in 2008. He uses precise assessments of the right cutting techniques depending on many factors (e.g. species, moisture content, and positioning). A ground person is there at all times and rigging equipment is used as necessary.

Pruning

Technical prunes are where Shawn showcases his eye for detail by making precise cuts to accomplish not only small healthy wounds, but also having a beautiful uniform tree.

His schooling in Natural Resources allows him to identify each tree and know how to perform the best practice and educate the client.

Processing

Each prune and removal produces wood for many different products that we process ourselves or give to local woodworkers we collaborate with. All the wood that we cut gets utilized and cycled back into the community. Let us know, if you would like anything back from your trees. We would love to connect you with a skilled woodworker from town, if you want something custom built or crafted into an art piece. We also offer firewood and kindling bundles for your fireplace.

About Us

We are Shawn and Sophia Vrooman, founders of Tree Cycle. With this company, founded in 2021, we are realizing our shared vision for a company that builds community, encourages creativity and creates a continuous dialogue around local tree work, tree health, and sustainable ways to utilize wood.

Shawn

"The two areas in my life I am most passionate about are trees and people. I am honored to be working in a field that allows me to be the voice between the two. I received my degree in Natural Resource Technology, Forestry and Wildlife in 2010. Some of the work I've enjoyed most following my studies was being a sawyer on a firefighting crew, crosscutting in the wilderness to clear trails and conducting plot surveys (Timber Stand Improvement). The continuous study and research after college and my professional work experience in forestry brought me even closer to understanding the inner mechanisms at work in a tree and the tree's connection with its soil and its surroundings. What has really surfaced in these last couple of years for me, as I transitioned into tree climbing, is being able to be personal with each tree - I can touch it, feel it, climb it, and I am the one responsible for the health of this tree."

Sophia

"I've joined this community in 2019 when I came to visit Salida from Germany and fell in love with its evident natural beauty and genuine people. What first caught my eye when I attended an event at the Salida SteamPlant, was the awe-inspiring Cottonwood tree next to the Arkansas river - draped in bright yellow fall foliage. Its beauty and the immediate connection with nature that became tangible for me, is one of the reasons I returned to make Salida my forever home. Learning about the many different species of local trees and how to conduct professional tree work is keeping this connection alive."
